What to Look For in a Used Commercial Van - A Buyer’s Checklist

When it comes to buying a used commercial van, not all vehicles are created equal. Whether you’re a tradie, delivery driver, or run a mobile business, your van needs to work as hard as you do - safely and reliably.
To help you make a smart investment, we’ve put together this simple buyer’s checklist so you know exactly what to look for when shopping for a used commercial van.
1. Service History
A well-documented service history is one of the most important indicators of a van that’s been looked after. Regular oil changes, brake checks, and scheduled servicing suggest the van’s previous owner kept it in good shape.
At City Motor Group, we provide full service history where available, and our AA appraisal includes a mechanical overview.
2. Tyre Condition
Uneven wear or bald patches can be a red flag for poor alignment or suspension issues. Tyres should have plenty of tread, and you’ll want to check the spare as well.
3. Suspension & Steering
Listen for clunks, rattles, or excessive bouncing during a test drive. Poor suspension can affect handling - especially important if you’re carrying heavy loads daily.
All our vans are road-tested to check ride quality, handling, and safety performance.
4. Signs of Rust or Leaks
Surface rust may not be a dealbreaker, but structural rust under the body or around the wheel arches can compromise safety. Also check for oil leaks or coolant residue around the engine bay.
5. Mileage vs Condition
High mileage isn’t always a bad thing if the van’s been well-maintained. However, lower mileage with poor upkeep can cost more in the long run. Condition, service history, and how the van was used all matter.
6. Interior Wear and Tear
Check that the interior is clean, functional, and free from excessive damage. If a van’s been treated roughly on the inside, there’s a chance the rest of it hasn’t had the best care either.
7. Security Features
If you’re storing expensive tools or equipment, look for factory or aftermarket security features such as central locking, alarm systems, and cargo barriers.
8. AA Appraisal & Road Test
All of our used vans are AA Appraised, meaning they undergo a 43-point mechanical check - including a road test. This gives both us and you peace of mind that your future van is safe, roadworthy, and ready for work.
